Camera Kit for a Pre-Wedding Shoot: What to Rent and What It Costs

A pre-wedding shoot is a short window with a lot riding on it. You have a couple, a location, good light for maybe two hours and no second chance if the pictures come out soft. The camera kit you carry matters, but not in the way most people think. You do not need the most expensive body in the shop. You need the right body, one or two good lenses, a way to keep the video steady and a few small items that stop the day from falling apart. This guide builds the kit piece by piece with real rental prices, so you can plan a budget before you book.

Start with the shot list, not the camera

Before you pick gear, write down what you want to deliver. A typical pre-wedding shoot has three parts:

  • Portraits: close and medium shots of the couple, with a soft background.
  • Wide scenic shots: the couple in the location, showing the place.
  • Short video clips: walking, laughing and candid moments, often with slow motion, for a teaser or a reel.

Each part needs something different, and your kit should cover all three with as few pieces as possible.

Step 1: the camera body

For stills and short video, a full-frame mirrorless body is the sweet spot. These are the day rates on the Rentux listings today.

  • Canon R8: Rs. 750 a day. Light, with great stills, and a good value pick.
  • Sony A7 III: Rs. 1,200 a day. The all-rounder, with dependable autofocus on moving subjects.
  • Canon R6 Mark II: from Rs. 1,300 a day. Excellent for both photo and video, and strong in low light.
  • Sony FX30: Rs. 2,000 a day. Choose this if the video is as important as the photos.

Step 2: the lenses that make the pictures look good

For portraits, the lens counts more than the body. A fast lens with a wide aperture blurs the background and makes the couple stand out.

A simple, effective pair is an 85mm for the couple and a 35mm for the scenes. If you are not sure which lens works with your body, our camera lens guide lists the options for Sony, Canon and Nikon.

Step 3: keep the video steady

Handheld video with a heavy lens looks shaky, and shaky clips ruin a teaser. A gimbal smooths walking shots. The Zhiyun Crane 2 is Rs. 800 a day, and the DJI Ronin RS 3 is Rs. 1,300. Balance the gimbal with your camera and lens attached before the shoot day, because an unbalanced gimbal fights you all day. Read gimbal on rent for a setup guide.

Step 4: the small things that save the day

  • Spare batteries. Pre-wedding shoots run long. Bring at least two spares per camera.
  • Memory cards. Use fast cards and carry extras. Format them in the camera before the shoot.
  • A lens cloth and a blower. Outdoor locations are dusty. A clean lens means sharp pictures.
  • A reflector. A small reflector lifts shadows on faces at no cost in power.
  • An umbrella or a cover. Weather changes fast. Protect the gear and the couple's outfits.

Three ready-made kits with a day budget

The simple kit, about Rs. 1,450 a day: Canon R8 (Rs. 750) with the Canon RF 85mm f/2 (Rs. 400) and the Canon RF 50mm f/1.8 (Rs. 300). Good pictures at a low cost, with light gear that is easy to carry.

The balanced kit, about Rs. 2,400 a day: Sony A7 III (Rs. 1,200), Sigma 85mm f/1.4 (Rs. 700) and Sony 35mm f/1.8 (Rs. 500). This is the best mix of quality and price for most couples.

The photo and video kit, about Rs. 4,000 a day: Sony FX30 (Rs. 2,000), Sony 24-70mm f/2.8 GM (Rs. 1,000) and the Zhiyun Crane 2 (Rs. 800), plus a spare battery set. Choose this if you want a polished video as well as the stills.

These totals use today's listing prices and can change. A week-long rental is much cheaper per day if you shoot across several days.

Plan the day like a pro

  1. Scout the location. Visit the same time of day if you can, and note where the light falls.
  2. Shoot in the golden hour. The hour after sunrise and before sunset gives the softest light.
  3. Start with the wide shots while the couple is fresh, then move to close portraits.
  4. Record video in short clips of five to ten seconds. They are easier to edit and keep the files small.
  5. Back up before you leave. Copy the cards to a laptop or drive on the same day.

Camera settings that work for pre-wedding portraits

You do not need to shoot in full manual to get good pictures. A simple setup does most of the job. Use aperture priority, set the aperture between f/1.8 and f/2.8 for portraits and keep the ISO on auto with a cap at a level you trust. Check that the shutter speed stays above 1/250 second for moving subjects, so a sudden laugh does not blur. Turn on eye autofocus if your body has it, because it keeps the couple's eyes sharp even as they move. For video, shoot at 25 or 30 frames per second for normal speed and 50 or 60 for slow motion, and keep the shutter at double the frame rate.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Using a very wide aperture on both faces. At f/1.4, one face can fall out of focus. Stop down to f/2.2 or f/2.8 when you shoot two people close together.
  • Shooting against the sun without a plan. Backlight looks beautiful, but expose for the faces and use the reflector.
  • Carrying too much gear. A big bag tires you out, and a tired photographer stops finding good angles. Stick to one body, two lenses and a gimbal.
  • Skipping a test shoot. Try the camera and lens at home the day you receive them, so the real shoot has no surprises.
