Which Canon should you rent?

For beginners and family trips: 700D, 200D Mark II or 70D

These crop-sensor DSLRs are simple to use, light, and come with a zoom lens that covers most everyday shots. The 700D with two kit lenses at Rs. 400 a day is hard to beat for a school function or a holiday. The 200D Mark II adds 4K video and a flip screen, which helps for vlogging. For hobbyists stepping up: 80D, 90D or 850D

These have better autofocus and faster shooting, which matters for kids, pets, sports and birds. Pair one with a 50mm f/1.8 at Rs. 200 a day and your portraits will improve straight away.

For weddings and paid work: 5D Mark IV, 6D Mark II, R6 or R6 Mark II

These are full-frame bodies. They handle low light far better, which matters in banquet halls, sangeet nights and evening receptions. The 5D Mark IV is a long-time wedding workhorse at Rs. 1,000 a day. The R6 Mark II adds the autofocus and eye tracking of a modern mirrorless camera, and it is the one to pick if you shoot fast-moving candids.

For creators on a budget: the R8

The R8 is Canon's lightest full-frame mirrorless body. At Rs. 750 a day, or Rs. 11,250 for a month, it gives you full-frame image quality for reels, YouTube and travel without the weight or price of the R6 line.

Already own EF lenses? Here's what to know

Canon's DSLR lenses use the EF mount. Newer mirrorless bodies use the RF mount. The EOS R and R6 listings include the mount adapter, so your EF lenses will work on them. If you rent the R8 or the R6 Mark II listing and want to use EF glass, ask the lender whether an adapter comes with it.

Canon DSLR or Canon mirrorless?

If you learned on a Canon DSLR, the jump to mirrorless is smaller than it looks. The menus are familiar and the colours are the same. What changes is the viewfinder and the autofocus.

A mirrorless viewfinder shows you the exposure before you press the shutter, so you see if a shot is too dark straight away. The autofocus on the R6 and R6 Mark II also tracks eyes and faces across the frame, which makes a big difference when people are moving: a baraat, a first dance, a child running at a birthday.

A DSLR still has a few things going for it. Battery life is much longer, because there is no screen running in the viewfinder. The optical viewfinder has no lag. And the rental price is lower for similar image quality. For slow, planned work like portraits in good light, product shots or landscapes, a 5D Mark IV or 6D Mark II is still a fine choice and cheaper per day.

Rent or buy a Canon?

A new full-frame Canon body with a good zoom lens costs well over a lakh rupees. Even a used 5D Mark IV is a big spend, and then there is servicing, sensor cleaning and the risk of the camera going out of date.

If you shoot a couple of paid jobs a month, renting per job keeps that money in your pocket, and you always get the right body for the brief. Buying starts to make sense once you are shooting most weekends. Plenty of working photographers do both: they own one body and rent a second, or rent a specialist lens when a job calls for it.
