Rent vs Buy a Camera for One Trip: A Worked Cost Comparison (2026)
Share
Renting a full-frame mirrorless camera for one trip costs Rs. 3,750 for a week. Buying the same Canon EOS R8 body is Rs. 1,42,995 at Canon India's listed price. You would need to rent for about 191 single days before the rental total passes the price of buying. This post shows the numbers for three cameras, how we worked them out and where buying makes more sense.
The numbers
Rental prices are from the live Rentux listings on 13 October 2026. Retail prices are from the manufacturer or an authorised Sony store page on the same date.
| Camera | Rentux rate | Retail price (body) | Break-even at day rate | Trip of 7 days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Canon EOS R8 | Rs. 750 a day, Rs. 3,750 a week | Rs. 1,42,995 (Canon India) | 191 days | Rs. 3,750 (2.6% of price) |
| Nikon Z5 | Rs. 750 a day, Rs. 3,750 a week | Rs. 97,895 (Nikon India offer price) | 131 days | Rs. 3,750 (3.8% of price) |
| Sony a7 IV | Rs. 1,900 a day | Rs. 1,70,990 (Sony ShopAtSC) | 90 days | Rs. 13,300 at the day rate (7.8%) |
How we worked it out
- We took the one day rental rate from the Rentux listing.
- We took the body only retail price from the official seller page, not a marketplace sale price.
- Break-even days is the retail price divided by the day rate.
- For the trip column, we used the weekly rate where one exists (R8 and Z5), or seven day rates where it does not (a7 IV).
Sources: Canon India EOS R8, Nikon India Z 5 and Sony ShopAtSC a7 IV. Street prices on online marketplaces are often lower, which moves the break-even earlier. Retail prices change often, so check them again before you decide.
What the table leaves out
Be honest about both sides. Buying also means a lens, a memory card, spare batteries and a bag, which can add tens of thousands of rupees. A camera you own keeps some resale value, so the true cost of buying is lower than the sticker price. On the other side, renting means the camera is not there for a spur of the moment shoot, and a long project can run past the point where buying is cheaper.

- You want a better camera for a shoot than the one you own.
When buying wins
- You shoot every week, for work or content.
- You expect to need the camera for more than the break-even days above.
- You want to learn on one body for a year.
