Tripod, monopod or gimbal

  • Tripod: for locked off shots, timelapse, long exposure, interviews and anything that must stay level. A fluid head gives smooth pans for video.
  • Monopod: lighter and faster for sports, events and wildlife. It takes the weight off your arms but does not hold the frame still alone.
  • Gimbal: for moving shots such as walking or following a subject. It is a handheld stabiliser, so you still need a tripod for static frames.

Which one for which shot

  • Walking vlog: a gimbal. See camera on rent for gimbals and cameras.
  • Sit down interview: a video tripod with fluid head, from Rs. 400 a day.
  • Football or event photos: a monopod, Rs. 250 a day.
  • Landscape or night shots: a sturdy photo tripod with a ball head.
  • Bird or wildlife with a long lens: a tripod with a gimbal head such as the Benro C3780TN at Rs. 600 a day.

Weight and height checks

Match the tripod load rating to your camera and lens together. A heavy telephoto on a light tripod shakes in wind. If you are shooting video, choose a fluid head and check that the plate fits your camera. For a full list, see our shoot and event equipment checklist.
