Wireless, lavalier or shotgun
- Wireless lavalier: clipped to the speaker's shirt. Best for walking interviews, talks and vlogs because the mic stays close to the mouth.
- Shotgun on camera: picks up what is in front of the lens. Good for run and gun video and B-roll sound, but less clean in a noisy room.
- Boom shotgun: held just out of frame on a boom pole. The cleanest sound for a sit down interview, and it needs a second person to hold it.
Which one for which job
- One person talking to camera: a single wireless set, from Rs. 300 a day.
- Two person interview: a 2 person wireless set. The Hollyland Lark M2 combo is Rs. 300 a day, the DJI Mic 2 is Rs. 700 and adds a recorder.
- Documentary or event interviews: a Rode NTG2 on a boom pole is Rs. 550 a day together.
- Podcast at a desk: a USB mic, such as the Sennheiser Profile USB at Rs. 250 a day.
Costs for a two day interview shoot
Two person wireless set (Hollyland Lark M2 combo) for 2 days is Rs. 500. Add a Zoom H4essential recorder as backup for Rs. 1,300 and the total is Rs. 1,800. Check the recorder levels before the speaker starts, not after.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a wireless mic on rent cost?
From Rs. 300 a day for a Rode Wireless Go II or Hollyland Lark M2. The DJI Mic 2 is Rs. 700 a day.
Is a lavalier better than a shotgun mic?
For one speaker who moves, yes. For a seated interview with a boom operator, a shotgun on a boom gives cleaner sound.
