Rental Cost vs Retail Price: A Break-Even Guide With Real Listing Prices (Oct 2026)

Is it cheaper to rent or buy? For the eight items in this guide, a short rental costs between 1.6 and 15 percent of the purchase price, and buying only pays off after 20 to 190 rental days. Every rental price comes from a live Rentux listing and every retail price from a named seller page, all checked on 13 October 2026. The method is written out below so you can check or repeat it.

The break-even table

Item Rentux day rate Retail price (seller) 3 day rental as % of price Break-even days
Sony PS5 standard Rs. 700 Rs. 69,990 (Gadgets 360) 3.0% 100
Canon EOS R8 body Rs. 750 Rs. 1,42,995 (Canon India) 1.6% 191
Nikon Z5 body Rs. 750 Rs. 97,895 (Nikon India) 2.3% 131
Sony a7 IV body Rs. 1,900 Rs. 1,70,990 (Sony ShopAtSC) 3.3% 90
GoPro Hero 12 Black Rs. 900 Rs. 22,990 (lowest listed, Smartprix) 11.7% 26
DJI Osmo Mobile SE Rs. 300 Rs. 5,999 (DJI India Shop) 15.0% 20
Optoma UHD33 4K projector Rs. 1,300 Rs. 1,99,000 to Rs. 2,25,000 (dealer) 1.7% to 2.0% 153 to 173
Forclaz MT100 jacket (-5 C) Rs. 50 Rs. 1,999 (Decathlon) 7.5% 40

Read the last column as the number of single rental days after which the rental total equals the purchase price.

Method

  1. Rental price: the one day price on the Rentux product page, with no multi-day discount, so the break-even is on the high side for rental.
  2. Retail price: the listed price on the manufacturer or a named seller page. Where a seller showed a sale price, we used the sale price, not the MRP. The projector shows a range because dealers list it at different prices.
  3. 3 day rental share: three times the day rate divided by the retail price.
  4. Break-even days: retail price divided by the day rate, rounded to a whole day.
  5. Not included: resale value, warranty, tax claims, accessories, lenses, memory cards, insurance, and the cost of a gap when you do not need the item.

Retail prices move often. Treat the table as a snapshot dated 13 October 2026, and check the seller before you decide.

What the table says

  • For high-priced gear you use for a few days a year, such as cameras and projectors, renting wins by a wide margin. Cameras take 90 to 191 days of rental to catch up.
  • For cheap items that you will use often, such as a phone gimbal at 20 days, buying wins sooner.
  • Clothing is in between. A jacket at 40 rental days only makes sense to buy if you trek often.

Laptops are listed on monthly plans and most models are priced on enquiry, so they are not in this table. For individual breakdowns, read rent vs buy a camera and PS5 rent vs buy.

Frequently asked questions

How do I work out whether to rent or buy?

Divide the retail price by the daily rental rate. If you will use the item for fewer days than that, renting costs less.

Why does the break-even use the one day rate?

It is the simplest and most conservative figure. Weekly and monthly plans make renting cheaper per day, so real break-even is later.

Which item pays off fastest when bought?

In this table, the DJI Osmo Mobile SE at about 20 rental days, then the GoPro Hero 12 at about 26.

Do the retail prices include GST?

They are the prices shown on the seller pages, which list consumer prices. Business buyers may be able to claim input credit, which this guide does not model.

When was this checked?

On 13 October 2026. Rental prices are from Rentux listings and retail prices from the pages named in the table.
